CAMPUS SALUTE University of Buffalo All of you are aware that the Federal Government is being called upon to play & much larger role in education than it has hitherto. From the beginning, this has been a Nation of opportunity. The large majority of Americans believe that all children, regardless of their origins or social status, should have the chance to develop their abilities to the fullest. To do so, however, they must have equal opportunity for education. The ideal of equal educational opportunity has not yet been realized in our Nation. In my new position as Commissioner of Education, I am required by the mandate of the Congress to "promote the cause of education throughout the country.' We have proof that the youth of America can profit from greater opportunities for education. Veterans attending college under the G. 1. Bill of Rights have had consistently superior scholastic records. Recent surveys have established the fact that an alarmingly high percentage of the ablest high school graduates do not, because of lack of funds, go on to further study in the collegas. Scholarship aid would bring the benefits of higher education to these better minds which are now denied such opportunities. For many years educators have decried the personal loss and inexcusable social waste caused by denying youth the advantages of higher education. Radio Broadcast by Earl J. McGrath, U. S. Commissioner of Education, Federal Security Agency, Washington, D. C., sponsored by Department of the Army over Mutual Network, Washington, D. C., April 9, 1949.
