and yet do not exhibit them in their own relations with other human
beings. It is not that they are hypocrits. It is in my opinion a
failure on the part of education to inspire an emotional reinforce-
ment to ideas. The Church school here has a peculiar opportunity.
In the field of international relations, particularly in the
work of UNESCO, I see several possible contributions. The first is
an urgent matter. Those who have worked closely with UNESCO will
realise I am sure that the great mass of our people have no concep-
tion of what it is or what it is trying to do. It will take the
full efforts of all of us to enlighten our people concerning its
high and fateful purposes. I would propose therefore to Jewish
educators that they show in their schools how consistent the pur-
poses of UNESCO are with the Jewish tradition, and how important it
is that all thinking people support its activities to the fullest.
The Jewish schools could show a striking example by making this one
of their first responsibilities.
Jewish educators themselves can help in another way outside
of the schools by participating in the activities of UNESCO itself.
The National Commission in this country is responsible for the
sponsorship of educational scientific and cultural projects. I
hope it will not appear improper to suggest that Jewish educators
might take the lead in a study of and in the preparation of a
report upon the influence of cultural pluralism on American culture.
In Professor Kallen you have a natural leader in this project.
