THE FIGHT AGAINST IGNORANCE* I want to talk to you about a world revolution that is now going on. This revolution is fortunately one in which bombs and guns are replaced by ideas and words and human compassion. The basis of this social upheaval is set forth in the Universal Decla- ration of Human Rights, Article 26 of which states in part: "1. Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. "2. Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups." If the efforts to realize Article 26 are successful, universal education will not only rid the world of the ever recurring scourge of war; it will also take from the backs of men the ageless burdens of hunger and disease and ignorance. The fight against ignorance is then a fight for peace and well-being for all wherever they may live. Without education there is little good in trying to improve health and agriculture and to bring the benefits of technology to underdeveloped areas. In a Middle Eastern country recently I saw our ongoing pro- jects under the Point 4 program, the enterprise launched by President By Earl James McGrath, U.S. Commissioner of Education, Federal Security Agency, Washington, D.C., recording made with Mr. David Bernstein, Federal Security Agency, March 11, 1952, to be used by National Association of Educational Broadcasters. Published in part in UNESCO NEMS, Vol. V, No. 9, April 1952, pp. 9-11, 14.
