American education is headed for disaster unless something is done
about school buildings and the teacher shortage I write of the "coming
breakdown11 in the hope that an awakened citizenry will act to make my prophecy
invalid; but I write in the certainty that unless adequate corrective action
is taken, there will be a breakdown of our public schools in the immediate
future
It was the great educator, Horace Mann, who said that in an age of
remarkable invention the free public school was the greatest discovery of man
The people of the United States may Lake price in their educational systems
T rere is no question but the t the otrength, vigor, productivity, well-being
and intellectual and spiritual stature of the nation have been enhanced
because educational opportunity has-constantly been increased throughout our
history We are now at the point where 98 out of 100 children of clementary-

Nearly one .of every Tite continues this education beyord high school, and college
graduations proceed at more than double the raté of any- other ne Ton in the

because we have recognized the necessity of educational opportunity for all,
