THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON January 12, 1950 Dear Margie: I am enclosing you a memorandum made out by Charlie Murphy. In Section 3, I want to call attention to the percentage of your return. It seems to me that it would be a good plan for you to have a confidential conversation with Miss Traubel and find out whether this is a customary arrangement or whether this is a special one just for you. The last part of Section 3 is very im- portant, especially the last two sentences. In Section 6, I think two years would be plenty for that situation. In Section 8, I want to call your attention particularly to the last sentence in Murphy's memorandum, All these references to the memorandum were gotten up by Murphy. The only reason I am being so particular about it and so careful is to save you trouble in the future. I think you had better have a frank talk with Jim - show him this memorandum and discuss it with him. Murphy suggested that a personal interview with a member of the RCA Victor Company, Mr. Davidson and himself or Clifford would be one way to work it out. Of course, if you can get the thing worked out with Jim it will be just as well but be sure you stand fast on the principal things mentioned in Murphy's memorandum, They are all entirely for your protection and now is the time to get that protection. I don't want you to be tied up in such a manner that you can be pushed around by any Corporation after I am through with this office, Of course, they wouldn't dare do it now but I am thinking of the far distant future when your real career will really begin.
