3. BATTLE FI EL DS CE MBTZ. The Batt 0 Fields of 16th and 18th August, 1870, lie to the To of Metz, on the road to Verdun. & visit to them cocupies a whole day. The Battle of Rezonville, fought on the 16th AUG. was one of the bloodiest of the whole war. In the course of the day no fewer than 138,000 Fronch troops and 476 guns were engaged at intervals, while the Gemman foIces amounted to 67,000 men With 222 guns. The Fronch loss was estimated at 379 officers and 16 .128 men, and the Corners loss at 711 Officcrs and 15,069 rank and file. The eight Geman Corps d'Arme C ongaged in the Battle OI Crevelotte, fought a the 18th Aug., numbercd about 230,000 men, opposed to whom vere 180,000 French. The Comans lost 899 officers and 19,260 men, the French 609 ficers and 11,705 men. Io the I.. of Lietz lic the Battle Ficlès of 14th Auge air of 31st AUG . and lst Scjo. 1870. The formor battle is known to the Frerch as the battle of Borny, while the Gemans have it the battle of as the ground between these villages was the pinc ipal object of attack. TO the N. of Metz, not far from BIC road to Thionville, lies Woippy, vhore Bazeine is last sortic, on 7th Oct., teminated in the retreat of the Fronch, battle of ninc hours' duration. - At the chateau of Prescati, 23 M. to the S. of Metz, on 27th oct. wes signed trc capitulation 0= Mctz, Whercby the fortress, with 3 marshels, 50 geneiels, 6000 oth er officers, 173,000 men (including 20,000 sick and. wounded), 55 cagles, 66 mitraillenses, 541 field- picces, and 800 fortress-guns, to gother with a vast quantity of othor munitions of wer, vissurrendered to the P.
