No. 2.
)
I. In compliance with orders from higher authority, the
undersigned, hereby relinguishes command of the Ninth Corps.
On parting, I wish to express my sincere appreciation of
the loyal support so willingly given by every officor and every man of
the commend, and to express my deep regret at the severance of these
relations, so recently established.
As you well know, the world at large is in a condition of
turmoil, and while we are not engaged, in the active prosecution of war,
we are not at peace.
The necessity which prompted my detaciment from your
Corps, may likewise at any moment demand your services on duty of the
greatest importance.
Although you have taken successful part in the greatest
war ever weged for the welfare of mankind, it has not teen possible for
you to receiv that thorough instruction which makes real and lussing
seldiers, and it therefore becomes the duty of every member of the
command, to give his best effort towerd, insuring such efficiency, that,
if called, upon, his organization may be ready.
The efficiency thus gained, will be an ever present asset
of Our Country, and while you may not realize it now, when you return
to civil life, it will be an ever present asset of the individual man
in his respect and subordination tovard his employers, and in his just
control and direction of subordinates.
Remember that your military instruction has only taught
you - can only teach you - the good - and how to be better soldiers and
how to be better men.
And when you return to your homes, 'as I trust you may in
the near future, show this good - show this manly side of your
characters, in your appearance and in your conduct, may
justify your teachings and exemplify the manly spiri
and seN nespect
of the soldier who has fought in war.
