DIVISION CODE In effect at noon 28 July 1918.
Instructions for use.
(1) Answer fone calls promptly, RING OFF at end of conversation.
(2) The enemy has excellent listening apparatus and spies and has
frequently picked up information with disastrous effect to our troops. One
careless word may convey valuable information to the enemy and mean the
lives of many men.
(3) Except in an emer gency never should any message in regard to
tactics be sent in the clear, except by messenger runner or buzzerfone, but
many things by gareful thought maybe so camouflaged as to avoid the neces-
sity of coding all messages.
(4) Never use name of a town, the rank of an officer or the desig-
nation of an organization. Use the code names of towns and locations, as
well as the code names of organizations, and of officers, if they have them
If an officer has no code name, omit rank and prefix his name with Mister.
(5) Telephone operators will cut off connection of anyone violat-
ing these orders and report all violatione to Division Signal Officer with
name and rank of offenders.
(6) This code will be strictly adhered to.
