TRUMAN "NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS SERVICE" REFUGEES EDVERHIMEN World Refugee Year officially came to a close in June 1960 amid statements and appeals by the United Nations and interested international public and private agencies that the spirit and momentum of public response engendered during the year be continued in further efforts to resolve remaining refugee problems. Although much had been accomplished during the year and some problems virtually resolved much still remained to be done in those situations where only alleviation of distress had been possible. The Secretary General of the United Nations reported to the General Assembly in October 1960 that 97 countries and territories had participated in the year's activities and that thirty-nine national Committees of private citizens, often under the patronage of the Head of State, had assisted in promoting the objectives of the year. Seventy-eight of the larger international non-governmental agencies had joined in an international committee for World Refugee Year to facilitate helpful actions in the various participating countries. As of October 20, 1960 over $83,000,000 had been contributed in cash or in kind above and beyond the normal annual contributions to refugee programs. Of this sum $26,000,000 were provided by governments and $57,000,000 by private sources. Campaigns for funds were continu- ing in many countries and these totals were not considered final. Some $20,000,000 of the funds raised by October remained to be allocated to specific programs still in the planning stage. $22,673,646 had been raised or pledged on behalf of refugees falling within the
