Summary
ASSEMBLY ADOPTS AMENDED INDTAN RESOLUTION
ON PRISONER-OF-WAR ISSUE IN KOREA
The General Assembly this afternoon adopted the Indian draft resolution on
the prisoner-of-war issue in Korea as amended by India itself.
The vote on the resolution was 54 in favor, 5 against and 1 abstention.
Those voting against were Byelorussia, Czechoslovakia, Poland, the Ukraine and
the USSR. China abstained.
The amendment to the resolution, introduced by V. K. Krishna Menon of India,
reworded the last paragraph of the preamble to read as follows (the inserted
words are underlined):
"Accordingly requests the President of the General Assembly to communicate
the following proposals to the Central People's Government of the People's
Republic of China and to the North Korean authorities as forming a just
and reasonable basis for an agreement SO that an immediate cease-fire
would result and be effected; to invite their acceptance of these. propo-
sals and to make a report to the General Assembly during its present
session and as soon as appropriate."
This amendment was adopted by 53 votes in favor, none against and 5 absten-
tions (Byelorussia, Czechoslovakia, Poland, the Ukraine and the USSR).
All amendments to the Indian proposal proposed by the USSR were rejected.
The Soviet proposal itself (Doc. A/L.118), identical to the one introduced
and rejected in the First Committee, was also rejected. The vote was 5 in favor,
40 against with 11 abstentions.
