NUMBER 17, PERSONAL AND TOP SECRET, FROM THE PRESIDENT FOR THE
PRIME MINISTER.
Replying to your Number 19, the Combined Chiefs of Staff in
F.A.N. 536, on 28 April, with my approval, authorized Alexander to
accomplish what I understand to be your idea regarding Trieste and other
areas formerly under Italian rule as a matter of military necessity.
I do not know what the effect of the forthcoming German surrender
in Italy may have on Alexander's plans in this matter.
