NUMBER 26, PERSONAL AND SECRET, FROM THE PRESIDENT FOR THE PRIME
MINISTER.
Following is proposed Submarine Statement for April:
QUOTE. German submarine activity continued during the month of
April. Yet despite enemy underwater operations, fewer United Nations
merchant vessels were sunk in April than in March and the number of U-boat
raiders sent to the bottom was practically double the number destroyed in
March. Moreover, the Nazis lost more U-boats in April than in any month
in nearly a year.
The enemy submarine menace will continue until all of the U-boats
have been accounted for, and there can be no let-down in the vigilance of
our forces. Virtually all German bases in France have been destroyed and
the Germans are operating from bases in the Baltic Sea and in Norwegian
ports. The major U-boat activity is around the United Kingdom with a
small number penetrating into the Western Atlantic. UNQUOTE.
