TRSNIT ARCHIVES. SERVICE RECORDS AND CABINET MEETING, OCTOBER 4, 1946 (add Paul Porter THE PRESIDENT Called meeting to discuss food situation - both gentl emen who are responsible for not getting P. H. steaks. FORRESTAL Hang em both! THE PRESIDENT Has been collecting figures but has not reached any conclu- sion. Have got to find answer or confess judgment - asked Anderson to tell positions. ANDERSON Has been opposed to control of meat - but thinks that we must continue controls now. There is no chance of regaining position within this country. 60 day suspensions is no good. Farmers will hold back for holidays. All cattlemen - sheepmen have contracted at prices which will not permit cattle to move in regular markets - only way is black market. Chain stores not in packing business - before now in - just as bad as packers going into chain store biz. There is an abundance of meat on ranges - our goal is to see how we can get this to market - only way we can do this is imports which will force range cattle in U. S. to market. 300,000 good steers can come out of Mexico immediately - 2 million in this coming year can be important. Opening border will antagonize every U. S. cattleman but may win support in New York.
