FROM: SECRETARY ROSS
TO : MR. AYRES, THE WHITE HOUSE
NR : 42
News stories about President coming daily from ship
will in all probability cease upon arrival of President at
Potsdam. Therefore, I can see no valid reason why date of
correspondents' trip should be advanced. You may tell corres-
pondents in confidence that it is now extremely underscore
extremely improbable that any side trips will be made by the
President. Although this whole business of side trips is still
up in air best guess is that none will be undertaken either to
London or elsewhere, but that President will return directly
to Washington after about three weeks. In view of this fact
some of correspondents may want to cancel reservations, since
all they could do in absence of side trips would be to wait in
Berlin for official handouts and then come home. Will let you
know plans as they develop. If side trips finally are elimin-
ated, it seems to me that purpose for which trip was arranged
will have been washed out. We are committed to it and will go
through with it if group desires, but I think they should know
the probabilities.
