COSMOS CLUB
Washington 5, D. C.
February 23, 1949
Dear Mr. Ickes
A California friend has sent me a copy of
your article, stated to be from the Los Angeles
Daily News, February 10, 1949, dealing with the
pending amendment to the United States Consti-
tution seeking to restrict the people in their
free choice of thier President. I am deeply
gratified that you have, with so much force and
power, taken up the struggle to prevent ratifi-
cation.
I should be grateful if you would tell me
whether there exists any national or other organi-
zation for making known the aspects of the case
which you so admirably set forth in your article
and, if not, whether you think such an organization
feasible or useful. As a member of the American
Political Science Association I have been cor-
responding with several of my fellow-members with
a view to the use of such persuasiveness as we
have with our State legislatures. But obviously
such individual action can be of little effect.
I had the pleasure of meeting you at Sandusky
a decade ago on the occasion of the one hundred
and twenty-fifth anniversary of the battle of
Lake Erie.
Faithfully,
/s/ Wallace McClure
