7:656-3002 June 26, 1952 Dear Mr. Bridgman: Mr. Howell G. Crim, Chief Usher of the White House, has asked us to reply to the in- quiries of Mr. Hutchison and yourself about the propriety of articles publicizing the work or products of various companies in the renovation of the White House. Keith R. As you know, all White House contracts contain a clause prohibiting the advertising or x 196 other commercial exploitation of work in the White House. While the Commission on Renovation of the Executive Mansion was in operation, it interpreted this clause to permit brief articles of the general nature in the house organs, but not in publications of general circulation. This office also has assisted some publi- cations in preparing articles about various struc- tural, decorating, or mechanical features of the White House, but has always objected and must con- tinue to object to the use of trade or company names in connection with such articles. Sincerely yours, JOSEPH SHORT Secretary to the President Mr. R. L. Bridgman, x American Radiator and Standard Sanitary Corporation, Eig Building, 8641 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, Maryland. IP/wgc
