286-A December 5, 1950 Dear Mr. Moseley: This is in acknowledgment of your letter of December first addressed to the President in further reference to the fund raising campaign which you are carrying on in behalf of the Baptist Memorial Hospital. The President's personal letter to you under date of November twenty-fifth has been noted. May I explain to you that ever since the President has X been in the White House he has followed the policy set by his predecessor and has not in a single instance endorsed a private fund raising campaign. The reason for this is that scores of xPP7129-A very meritorious undertakings -- with hospitals usually in the lead -- are imaugurated in every state in the Union. The number is so great that it would be impossible for the President to recognize it. I know you understand how necessary it is for him to treat all of his friends on a basis of exact equality. The only fund raising campaigns which the President endorses are those which are carried on on a national basis and with whose work he is officially connected, such as the American Red Cross and the Community Chest Federation. I am very sorry to disappoint you but I feel sure you will understand why the President could not make an exception in the case of the hospital in Kansas City. Very sincerely yours, R MATIONAL TRUMAN ARCHIVES AND RECORDS SERVICE V. WILLIAM D. HASSETT Secretary to the President Mr. Ray F. Moseley, Suite IIII Insurance Exchange Building, Kansas City, Missouri. wdh-mg X76-A
