MAY3 1 1949 Filed by 3 - B MR. DAWSON misal May 12, 1949 My doar Mr. Buxton: This is in response to your letter of April thirteenth, addressed to General Vaughan, concerning employment in the field service of the Bureau of the Census in Arkanses. # We have chocked with the Direetor of the Bureau of the Census and are advised that the Buroau has no position in its field service as State Super- X 159-8 visor in any State. The Bureau's field work is carried out through several hundred temporary dis- triet offices in various localities throughout the country. These offices are supervised by thirteen area offices, each with a small staff of permanent civil service employees. The Bureau advises that appropriations for field work are very limited, and it is bolieved that establishment of 48 additional positions as State Supervisor, plus the additional office force which would be required, would be an unjustifiable additional expense. If there are any other questions, please 3. let us know. ARCHIVES RECORDE . Very sincerely yours, DONALD S. DATSON Administrative Assistant to the President Mr. John E.
