Secretary Lovett called and said he had
talked to General Hilld ring and told him that any
instructions he had received from the Department are
hereby cancelled. He has told Hilldoring that he
and Herschel ''Johnson are to operate independently

and without restraint insofar as the end result agreed
upon will be obtained.

He also told Hilldoring that by no means
should the United States be placed in the position of
being a lone dissenter. That we have always followed
a policy of going along with the majority and should
do so in this instance.
He also warned Hilldering, however, that
we should not if possible sacrifice the gains we have
made with the Arabs.
