President Harry S. Truman
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. President:
Coal is getting short here. People don't like it. And
I have three relatives in Pennsylvania out of work, and two more
in danger of loss of work, due to coal shortages in the places
they work. They don't like it and I don't like it.
Let's go ahead and make and stock the hydrogen bomb. # As
a precaution. And hope we never have to use it. We are less
likely to have occasion to use it if we have it.
You may be sure Russia will make it and plenty, if she can,
and where would we be without it.
Now on this subject of any plan with Russia (and others)
not to make and use A-Bombs or H-Bombs. There just is no plan
that can be devised, Baruch's or otherwise, to deal with Russia.
Russian leaders have no political or social morals as we understand
it. They lie and cheat, always have and always will, they do not
keep their word nor treaties. They do not intend to. Gee whiz,
looking at "the record" of our dealings with Russia, what is there
in it to give us any slightest hope, let alone belief, that they
would keep such an agreement?
Inspection of Russia? That's a laugh. Even if they
made a solumn agreement and agreed to let us send in all the
inspectors we wished, they still would double cross us. The area
of Russia, and of Siberia, is so great, they still can hide away
their bomb plants (even under ground if they wish) with slave labor
and how are we to find them? They will build and hide them and
we will never know till the bombs hit us. TO think inspectors
can find them is rediculous. To think we can trust the present
Russian leaders is rediculous. The Russianleader mind is a criminal
type mind, we just can't deal with it.
You and I and most of us now living will not live long enough
to see the mind of the Russian leader change, so that we can trust it.
Yours very truly,
