Generoso Pope Dies;
Ran II Progresso
By the Associated Press
NEW YORK, April 28. - Gene-
oso Pope, 59, publisher of the
Italian language newspaper Il
Progresso, died today in Post
Graduate Hospital.
Mr. Pope also was head of the
Colonial Sand & Gravel Co.
The Italian - born publisher
spearheaded the letters-to-Italy
campaign which was credited with
a major role in the defeat of
the Communists in Italy's 1948
elections. At Mr. Pope's instiga-
tion many thousands of Italian-
Americans wrote friends and rela-
tives in Italy urging them to re-
ject the Communist bid for power.
Active in Democratic politics
and a former member of the
party's national committee, Mr.
Pope was a close friend of Mayor
William O'Dwyer.
Mr. Pope was an outstanding
example of the immigrant who
made good. He came to the United
States in 1904 with $4 in his
pockets, working for я time as a
hod-carrier. Eventually he was
president of the company for
which he worked as a laborer, and
he lived on Park avenue.
