Honored Sir;- Irrespective of political affiliation,
to
all of my acquaintances have been enthusiasticair their approval
of our new President and eager to pr amote hearty cooperation
with you in your arduous and sacred responsibilities.
We have admired you personally.We like to have a President
whose example we can commend to our youth and young men. Everything
we have been hearing about you has caused many of us to thank God
that now we have in the White House such a man.
In the April 30th issue of LIFE on page 23 is this sentence,
"He sometimes likes to top off a busy day with a drink of bourbon."
Is this an accurate report ?
I'll not suggest my reaction to the report. Without gossip or
report from newsmongers, ,I am very desirous of knowing from you
directly if the report is true.
You know sir,that the beer and whisky crowd are high-pressure
agents for their business. This note concerning you is worth already
thou sands of dollars for them. We have had too many high ranking men
in Washington who have played heavily and frequently into their hands.
Suchrhigh ranking men have not only lent their strong influence to
the liquor interest, but they have been excellent customers of the
