TEXAS BAPTISTS 'CALL' POKER-LOVING TRUMAN Association Votes Against Any Honorary Degree FORT WORTH, Nov. 15.-(AP)- The Baptist General Convention of Texas Thursday leveled criticism at President Truman for what it as- serted was his attitude toward gambling and drinking. The convention, on motion of the Rev. L. L. Roloff, Corpus Christi, instructed trustees of all Texas Baptist colleges and universities not to confer an honorary degree on persons holding "to such a posi- tion." The resolution: "Because of the reported attitude of the President of the United States as a Baptist toward gam- bling and drinking and because of the invitation of Baylor University to confer upon him the high recog- nition of an honorary degree, I move that we instruct the trustees of all our colleges and universities not to confer an honorary degree on those holding such a position." The resolution was adopted by the convention without opposition. r At Waco, Pat M. Neff, president of Baylor, replied, "No comment," when told of the resolution. "No Baptist school should confer a degree on a man who likes his poker and drinks his bourbon," the Rev. W. L. Shuttleworth, Houston, said.
