Dear Mr. Shay:
Congressman Bell has very courteously
forwarded to the President your letter acquainting
him with the historical papers you have in your
1561
possession bearing on the activities of your
great grandfather, Jacob Hiltibidal, in the
early days in Independence.

The President would naturally be in-
terested in seeing documents of this kind bearing #
on the beginnings of Independence as a trading
post. If he were not working under such an ex-
tremely heavy pressure these days I should ask
you to bring the documents to the White House.
But the daily schedule of the President
is so full that I am afraid I cannot give you an
immediate appointment. I shall, however, bear
your offer in mind and hope it will be possible
at a later date to have you show these papers.
Very sincerely yours,
MATTHEW J. CONNELLY
Secretary to the President
