Dear Mrs. Gardner:
I am sure you will understand why it
was not possible before this to acknowledge your
thoughtful letter to the President written on
April sixteenth. He has, as you can readily
surmise, been working under a tremendous pressure,
a pressure which shows no sign of abating in the
immediate future. On this account I would not
feel justified in asking you to send the copy
x561
of the Duval papers which you kindly offer to
the President. For the time being he seems to
have no recourse except to reserve all of his
energy for his official duties. I am sure you
will understand that this does not minimize his
appreciation of your kind offer.
Very sincerely yours,
WILLIAM D. HASSETT
Secretary to the President
x
Mrs. Philip Gardner,
74 Commonwealth Avenue,
Boston 16, Massachusetts.
