1 When I graduated from High School in May, 1901, it was expected by the family and by me that there would be some chance for more education. Difficulties overtook us which resulted in the loss of the family farm of 160 acres and of the home place at Waldo and River Boulevard in Independence. It was necessary that some addition be made to the family income. So I got a job as timekeeper on a rail- road construction outfit under L. J. Smith. He was building a double track for the Sante Fe Railroad from a little place named Eton to Sheffield, a suburb of hansas City. My salary was $35.00 a month and 5. board. There were three construction camps about five miles apart. : ARCHIVES "ANTONAL SERVICE RECORAS AND << SOVERN It was my job to check the men at each of these camps twice daily. I was furnished with a tricycle car. It's power was by hand and I furnished the power. The workmen were hobos and they worked from payday to payday to get enough money for one weekend drunk. Payday was every two weeks. If a man drew his pay under the two weeks' time he was discounted ten per cent. Daily pay was fifteen cents an hour for ten hours a day. .
