Embassy has learned that Lovink, following talk referred
to EMBTEL 220 March 6, yesterday had long talk with
Drees and sought convince him Dutch action essential
save Hague Conference. Drees however, did not regard
idea Dutch initiative re Jogja restoration as having
any possibility cabinet acceptance and he therefore
rejected it.
Last night Boon called upon Embassy officer for
general talk re Indonesia and departed leaving impression
Dutch authorities have been greatly embarrassed and
shaken by seeing their plans for roundtable conference
(upon which high hopes were staked) so quickly and
thoroughly jeopardized by Republic and BFO recalitrance.
Government faces dilemma of which political party leaders
and their press become painfully aware hiatus from
Catholics on down. Need to agree restoration Republican
Government Jogja being admitted by steadily growing
number officials and writers. Danger is wide enough,
recognition may come too late. Boon left no doubt
Foreign Office, at least, feels only UNCFI initative
can save situation.
Today Boon has advised that Lovink had meeting this
morning with nine parliamentary party leaders (including
Romme, Van Naters, etc. who were named advisors for
Hague conference, and made deep impression upon them
in describing dilemma now confronting Netherlands
