Bidault tells me that he had to face a very stormy
session of the Council of Ministers this morning
General de Gaulle began by being intransigemnt and several
Ministers attacked him (Bidault) bitterly as an appeaser;
but Bidault believes that he has achieved sonething:
(One) Orders are to be sent to the French forces in
the Levant to drop all provocative attitudes and to strive
hard to avoid all clashes with the British.
(Two) Instead of inviting the large numbor of powers
that De Gaulle suggested yesterday, the proposed confer-
ence would include only the five great powers.
He let me read the telegram which is to 6° forward
later this afternoon to the five capitals instructing his
Ambassadors to suggest that a conference be held at Paris,
(he remarked that while they suggested Paris as the seat
of the conference
