Upon conclusion of visit of Senators Wheeler,
Capehart, Hawkes and McFarland to Rome Senator Wheeler
sent me following letter dated June 5.
1Before leaving Italy, I want to take this opportunity
on behalf of the committee and myself personally to thank
you most sincerely for all you have done for us. The
opportunity that you have afforded us for the audience
with His Holiness Pope Pius XII was deoply appreciated
by every member of our group. Most important was our
private audience with His Holiness which was alluminating
and instructive for the four Senators of this committee.
Neither are we unappreciative of the very delightful
dinner that you tendered us, and the circumstances surround-
ing it during which we had opportunity to converse with
