Dear Sam:
Your letter in regard to the return of the
Securities Exchange Commission to Washington
is appreciated.
As you kmow, I an mairing every effort to get all
the Agencies back to Washington just as quickly
as ossible but there is no place to put then.
Congress rofused to allos ne office space to tratis-
act my ama busines: aftez they had given ne the
funds for the construction. I have had to put up
with temporary quarters a blocic from The White House
for my immediate office staff. The Secretary of State
has offices all over town. None of the organizations
outside of Washington want to come back and go into
old wooden structures built for tomporary quarters
and I don't thinle they ourht to have to do that.
It seems to the the logical thing to to would be for
the legialative branch of the Government to appoint
a Joint Committee to cooperate with my Housing
Director for Government Dopartments and try to work
out a plan and progran for the capital eity as it
affects the Agencies of the Government,
There just isn't any way to bring these Agencies
back to Washington and nut them down in the middle
of the street.
Sincerely yours,
HARRY S. TRUMAN
