Dear Mr. Kimball:
I can't tell you how very much I appreciate
your thoughtfulness in taking time out to write
me about the balcony in the White House. I am
very happy that you approve it.
I think it will add to the architectural
symmetry of the White House, and that is the
only reason in the world that I wanted to have
it built. The awnings on those columns abso-
lutely distorted their proportions.
I was not thinking of my own comfort when the
program was inaugurated.
