MEITARY MUNITIONS BOARD WASHINGTON 25, D.C. 1 20 April 1949 STATES OF Dear Don: I have just learned that there may be established a Commission for the Alteration of the White House and that Cameron Clark of Southport, Connecticut and New York City is being considered as a member of this Commission. I consider him to be such an outstanding choice for such an appointment that I promptly asked him to send me a statement of his background and experience as I wished to place it in your hands. In our section of New England the name Cameron Clark is practically a by-word in connection with the recondition- ing and restoration of early New England houses. To be able to say that one's house has been reconditioned under the di- rection of Cameron Clark is somewhat similar to the name Sterling on fine silver. Mrs. Carpenter and I engaged him to recondition our early New England residence and, therefore, speak with some authority. I assume it is desired that the White House, after it is reconditioned, will combine the virtues of being authen- tic in architecture consistent with the period of its con- struction, beautiful in appearance and comfortable and pract- ical as a place to live and entertain. Cameron Clark's advice would be a vital factor in achieving these ends. I am attaching the letter which he has sent me which outlines in detail his background and experience, and I recom- mend him to you in the highest of terms for this appointment. Sincerely yours, ARCHIVES "NATIONAL AND RECORDS SERVICE' in you Mr. Donald S. Dawson Administrative Assistant to the President The White House Washington, D. C. RECEIVED D. F.
