K ^sevelt's Swimming Pool.
Paris, February 7.
To the Editor of The New York Herald:
To remove a false impression, may
I make the following statement: For
many years it has been the custom
for Congress, on the retirement of a
president, to vote the sum of $50,000
to paint certain rooms, replace broken
crockery, kitchen utensils, linen, etc.,
in the White House. This year, Co-
lonel U.S. Grant 3rd, supervisor of
public buildings and parks, hopes, if
the president-elect so desires, out of
this sum to be able to build a small
swimming-pool. The incoming presi-
dent, being crippled, finds that swim-
ming is the only form of exercise he
can indulge in.
Before leaving America, Colonel
Grant asked me to advise how such a
pool could be added most economically
to the White House, and I drew a plan
which, to the best of my belief, should
not cost more than $10,000, if as much,
and would be paid for out of the
$50,000. This pool, if it is built, would
seem a small and wise investment on
the part of Congress and the people
of the United States if it keeps the
incoming president fit for his arduous
duties.
Perhaps even J. P. Swift, who cri-
ticized this extravagance, will agree
to this.
WILLIAM ADAMS DELANO.
