The United States is honored to be host to the distin-
guished Foreign Ministers present for the signing of the North
Atlantic Pact. This is an historic occasion which I find deeply
gratifying.
The American people and their Government are determined
to do everything in their power to help achieve just and lasting
peace in the world. We are vigorously supporting the North Atlantic
Pact because we firmly believe it is an essential step in building
the peace.
This treaty is a bulwark of peace because it is an
expression profoundly important fact
the
necessity of international cooperation. It is a recognition of the
reality that in the world today individual nations, no matter how
strong or well-meaning, cannot achieve peace and well-being solely
by
their own efforts. Human society today has reached a state of
development in which peace and progress can be achieved only by the
combined effort of many nations, acting in unison.
