DEPARTMENT OF STATE
WASHINGTON
July 27, 1951
MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
Subject: Reply to Australian Ambassador's letter
of July 17, 1951 regarding tension
between India and Pakistan
In our conversation of July 19 the question arose as to
whether it would be in order to reply to the Australian
Ambassador's letter of July 17 in which was quoted a message
sent by Mr. Menzies to the Prime Ministers of India and
Pakistan expressing concern over the current tension between
the two countries and tendering the Australian Government's
good offices.
I am conveying your thanks for this letter in my reply
to a similar letter addressed to me by Mr. Spender. I there-
fore believe it will be unnecessary for you, to write an
acknowledgment.
