BIOGRAPHICAL DATA CONCERNING
DR. OSPINA AND CERTAIN MEMBERS OF HIS PARTY
A.
Dr. Mariano OSPINA Pérez, born Medellin, Colombia,
November 24, 1891. Son of wealthy and devoutly
Roman Catholic parents. (Mother is reputedly the
richest woman in Colombia today. Grandson of one
Colombian president (Mariano OSPINA Rodriguez) and
nephew of another (Pedro Nel OSPINA). Wife, Berta
Hernandez, is sister of Julio Hernandez, director
of "El Colombiano", Medellin, probably the most
influential Conservative daily of Colombia. They
have 4 sons. Educated in University of Antioquia,
Medellin; graduate study at Louisiana State Univer-
sity, University of Wisconsin, and University of
Liege (Belgium). Mining engineer, coffee grower
and cattle raiser. Owns 4 large ranches. Has a
fine orchid garden. Served in Assembly of Antioquia,
on Medellin city coundil, Manager of the Antioquian
Railway, Representative and Senator in Colombian
National Congress, Minister of Public Works in
cabinet of the last Conservative President (Abadia
Mendez, 1926-1927). Has been for many years Presi-
dent of the National Association of Coffee Growers.
Speaks English but is reluctant to do so.
B. Dr. Roberto URDANETA Arbeláez, a prominent "liberal"
Conservative leader, ex-Minister of Foreign Rela-
tions (1931), ex-Minister to Perú, ex-Ambassador to
Argentina, Colombian representative on the Hague
Court, Colombian representative to the Mexico Con-
ference (1945). Has acted as attorney for FEA, RDC,
and various U. S. firms and banks. Speaks English.
C.
Dr. Eduardo ZULETA Angel, corporation lawyer (long
represented the United Fruit Co.), Conservative,
ex-Ambassador to Perú, President of the Preparatory
Commission of the Assembly of UN, Colombian delegate
at the San Francisco Conference (1945) . Speaks
English.
D.
Dr. Fernando SALAZAR Grillo, philm thropist and
wealthy business man, ex-manager of the Agricultural
Mortgage Bank of Bogotá, Colombian delegate at the
Mexico Conference (1945). Is married to a cousin
of José Camacho, Secretary of the Colombian Embassy
here. Speaks no English.
