He plans to correct the existing critical diffi- culties that adversely effect the people of Chile que A t the present time the worst are poverty, inflation, and lack of industrial facilities with which to use the at present unde- veloped natural resources of the country. He wishes to continue and expand the legitimate activities of North American corporations in Chile, but he complained of their continued persistent interference with the domestic political interests of the country He said that North American business controls two newspapers that vigorously oppose his party and its constructive liberal policies. He hopes to mitigate poverty by an adjustment of wages for labor, to correct inflation by economy in government ex- penditures, and to develop native industry as rapidly as MERIVES SERVICE'* CORDS possible. SEVERN The expenditures for his armed forces at the present time absorb one-fourth of the entire budget which he considers so extravagant as to necessitate a radical reduction in the military and naval forces. In reply to a specific question he said he has no fear of a revolutionary effort by the disaffected military to change the government with a purpose of maintaining its strength. He did however say t hat Chile is "military minded." He has no fear of a war in the near future, but if war should come he will join with us in our defense of America with all of his limited facilities. - 3 -
