Spanish Occunation of Tancier Zone. The French
Government is being appros.ched by the American and
British Governments in regard to the steps necessary
in order to terminate the illegal Spanish occupation of
the International Zone of Tengier. It is hoped that a
joint approach can be mnde to the Spanish Government at
an early date.
Syris and Labanon - Allied Talks Proceeding. In
the absence of further major developments in the Levent
itself yesterday, the center of interest in the Franco-
Levantine crisie has shifted for the moment to Anglo-
American consultations on the next step to be taken.
The
British have suggested general Allied Levantine talks on
the whole question of United Nations forces in the Levant
during the war and recommend Beirut as the locale. Our
present disposition is to urge that Paris be the scene of
such talks and thet they be on a level which would include
Gen. de Gaulle personally, since according to Gen. Beynet
the whole French course in the Levant States is de Gaulle's
personal policy.
A serious resction on the part of the Arab world
to the French attitude is already apparent. King Ibn
Saud, through an official, informed our Legation at Jidda
that "Arebs cannot remain more spectators" of what is going
on. The King has telegraphed de Gaulle. The Secretary
General of the new Arab League has strongly assailed the
French. The local situations in Lebanon and Syria remain
disturbed by strikes, closed stores and street deponstra-
tions.
Yugoslavs on Three Borders. Tito has accepted the
US-UK demarche on Venezia Giulia but has cheracteristically
made various reservations. He demends: (1) that repre-
sentatives of the Yugoslav Army be included in the area's
militery administration; (2) thet Yugoslav Army unite remain
there, though coming under SAC; (3) that AMG not through the
civil authorities he has alrendy set up in the area.
