Bidault has expressed to Caffery his extreme pleasure over his trip to the United States and particularly his conversations with the President, the Secretary, and the Acting Secretary. He asked for a short time in order to arrange several matters, including northwestern Italy and the Levant situation. He stated his realization that the future of France depends on good relations with the United States which must not be im- periled by minor grievances. Bidault promised to do some thing about Frenay's actions over the French prisoners in Germany and the attacks on SHAEF in certain French papers. He stated that he would not hesitate to use pressure, in- cluding pressure from his own party-wwich is de Gaulle's political mainstay, on de Gaulle in order to bring about desired results. Bideult concluded the conversation by stating that he wished to bring de Gaulle to the United States to visit President Truman in about a month's time. He asked for Ceffery's opinion on this matter. SHARF Delegation Meeting with Russians Regarding Exchanze of Prisoners of War. Murphy reports on a meeting at Halle between SHAEF and Russian delegations where a detailed plan was worked out for the overland exchange of Allied and Soviet prisoners of wer and displaced persons.
