French Formally Agroe to Vithdraw from Italy. The French apreement to withdraw from MW Italy was signed at Caserta the evening of June 11. It provides that US-UK forces will procressively relieve Fronch troops in Italy starting at once, Except for a French trensit camp at Susa all French troops and officiels will be west of the 1939 Franco-Italian frontier by July 10. They will be out of various specific valleys by enrlier dates sterting June 20. Meanwhile all French propaganda in NV Italy will cense at once, and to insure a smooth transfer of authority the French authorities will furnish all available information to the US-UK forces and AMG. No Italian troops will be stationed within 15 miles of the frontier as long ns Allied troops are available, though Italian carabinieri and customs officials will be employed na usual. The normal pre-war freedon of frontier movement across the border will be allowed. SAC will trent this movement of the French troops a.s R normal routine relief, will give it no special publicity, and will recommend to the US and UK that no official announce* ment be made on it. This is to preserve French suscepti- bilities. The whole question of publicity was discussed at Caserta; the French generals signing the agreement thought it undesirable. SAC said he felt it would be a mistake to withhold publication of some anouncement since he had no control over the Italian press and there were at lenst 25 US and UK correspendents in MW Italy. It was finally agreed to let Washington, London, and Paris decide what action they wished to take on publicity in this matter. Allied s AND to REGOKOS SERVICEA cav
