SECRET THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE WASHINGTON AUG 2 2 1950 Dear Mr. President: On the basis of recommendations from the Joint Chiefs of Staff on 31 July 1950, the Department of the Army was authorized to aug- ment their forces, by induction into Federal service on or about 1 September 1950, four divisions and two regimental combat teams of the National Guard together with supporting units. In order to provide adequate tactical and troop carrier air support for the additional infantry divisions and regimental combat teams, the Joint Chiefs of Staff consider it necessary to induct the following Air National Guard and Reserve units into active Federal service: 4 fighter-bomber groups, 2 fighter-bomber squadrons, 1 light bomb squadron, 1 group headquarters from the Air National Guard, and 2 medium troop carrier wings from the Reserve. This action will result in increasing the present Air Force strength by 1,662 officers and 8,606 airmen. On the basis of these recommendations from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, I have authorized the Department of the Air Force to call up the above listed Air National Guard and Reserve Units. Respectfully yours, haus Johns The President The White House DECLASSIFIED E.O. 12065 SEC. III ODER. <TR. 6-14-79 NARS, Date 12.2.79 SECRET
