C. 6 February 1951 MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT On November 22, 1949, you approved the designation of the Commanding General, Continental Air Command, as alternate interim successor to the Chief of Staff, United States Air Force. In the event of catastrophe, Headquarters of the Secretary of the Air Force will probably be moved to Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, the present station of the Commanding General, Tactical Air Command. Secretary Finletter desires, therefore, to appoint the Commanding General, Tactical Air Command (Lt.General Cannon) as the alternate, interim successor to the Chief of Staff.
