BEGI ASCIEIED THE FOREIGN SERVICE OF THE we 8: ne #1852. of Blace , MARS 3(E) Aug. and Date 9. 2273 UNITED STATES OF AMERICA hy ADDRESS OFFICIAL COMMUNICATIONS TO American Embassy, Ciudad Trujillo, Dominican Republic, August 5, 1952. SONPIDENT IAL My dear Mr. President: Now that I have spent a few weeks in the Domi- nican Republic, I wish to avail myself of your kind invitation to send you my impressions of Ciudad Trujillo and of the local situation. May I say first of all that I am extremely pleased with the fine residence which the Govern- ment has provided for me. The house is beautiful, impressive, and at the same time most comfortable. The surrounding grounds are very fine indeed. Ciudad Trujillo is a clean and modern city in a splendid setting. Moreover, it still enshrines many colonial monuments of first importance, including the Palace of Diego Columbus and the first cathedral church of the Western Hemisphere. The Dominicans are a friendly and open people who have made me feel very welcome here. Much more important than the physical surround- ings is the fine staff which I found here. If this Foreign Service establishment is representative of all of our others, I can only say that critics of the Department of State and the Foreign Service have much to learn about the excellent work which repre- sentatives of our country are doing abroad. Thus far there has been only one fly in the ointment of my content. A newspaper reporter to whom I gave an interview on the afternoon of the day on which I presented my credentials brought out a jumble of distortions and inventions which has caused me no little embarrassment. Among other inventions The President, The White House. DECLASSIFIED o. 11652, Sec. 3(E) and >(D) or (E) Dept. of Scate letter, 5-7-77 PROJECT NLT 49.59 ny He MARS.D
