"THE PEACEFUL ARTS" The President of the United States, by selecting "The Peace- - ful Arts" as his official wedding gift to His Majesty King Farouk I of Egypt, has paid tribute to Egypt as the most ancient of civilized coun- tries and the birthplace of Agriculture, Industry, The Sciences and The Arts -- the four subjects which constitute the theme of this series of engraved crystal urns. ARCHIVES 'NATIONAL AMD : RLCORDS SERVICE These Steuben glass urns, selected by the President, exem- plify the highest quality of contemporary American craftsmanship, and employ a material which has unusual historic significance for both Egypt and the United States. In selecting glass as the medium of his gift, the President has shown his appreciation of the role Egypt has played in the history of glassmaking. The glass industry was born in Egypt more than 5,000 years ago, and it was Egyptian glassmakers whose knowledge and skill spread the science and art of glassmaking throughout the civilized world. Glass also holds a unique position in the economic and cultural history of America. Glassmaking, established at Jamestown, Virginia in 1608, was the first American industry; and the gift of a set of glass
