DESLASSIFIED SECRET B.O. 11652, Sec. 3(E) and 5(D) or (E) Dept. of State letter, Aug. 10, 1972 By WLTCH NARS Date 6.27.75 DEPARTMENT OF STATE WASHINGTON June 12, 1945 MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT Subject: Publicity of French Withdrawal from Northwestern Italy. It is possible that in your press conference to- morrow you may be asked about the situation in North- western Italy. In the Agreement signed yesterday at Marshall Alexander's headquarters, providing for the withdrawal of French troops, it was specified that Alexander would recommend to the British and American Governments that no announcement be made on this matter. In the absence of a specific French request, it is the Department's feeling that any announcement from our side might needlessly humiliate the French and serve to keep open a painful subject which we are anxious to close. Consequently I suggest that you decline comment on this subject if it is brought up at the press conference. SERVION country Acting Secretary
