    "ocrText": "TRUMAN\nARCHIVES \"NATIONAL RECORDS AND\ne COVERAGE\nSERVICE\"\n- 5 -\njobs; a recent news item from Stuttgart tells us that \"former employees of\nthe Denazification Ministry are having difficulty in finding new positions\neither in government or private industry.\"\nThese tendencies have most frequently emerged in the arguments of defense\ncouns el at the Nurnberg trials; indeed, during the past year I personally have\nfound these defense arguments to be the most significant and revealing feature\nof the trials. At the outset, defense counsel chiefly endeavored to show that\ntheir particular clients were not individually responsible for atrocities,\nand had disapproved or opposed them. More recently, some German lawyers con-\ntend that these things were not crimes at all. It is argued, for example,\nthat the Germans were entirely vithin their rights in rounding up\n.\nSERVICL\nand Belgians and Poles and Russians and deporting thcm to Germany to forced\nGOVENNA\nlabor in German mines and factories. The undisputed evidence of concentration\ncamp outrages, gassings of Jews by the million, and infamous medical experi-\nments on human beings seems to have made relatively little dent; now we are\nblandly told that the allied bombing offensive was far more wicked, and a recent\nrevien of General Eisenhower's book \"Crusade in Europe, which appeared in a\nGerman newspaper, is violently critical of General Eisenhower for having auth-\norized the bombing of Germany; the earlier German raids on Rotterdam, Belgrade\nand London go unmentioned. Anti-semitism is far from dead and now gives rise\nto excuses for the Nazi porsecution of Jews; last November one of the German\nlawyers told the court:\nIn fact, in all communist revolts in Germany Jews played a leading\npart; in any economic crisis Jens managed to make money at the ex-\npense of non-JeNs; in many leading professions Jews vere in an\noverwhelming majority though only little more than 1% of the popula-\ntion was Jewish. Lack of modesty and tact, and an arrogant sneer\nat ideals dear to the bulk of the German population did a lot of\nharm, to the misfortune of all decent and sonsible Jews."
