TRUMAN ARCHIVES "NATIONAL RECORDS AND e COVERAGE SERVICE" - 5 - jobs; a recent news item from Stuttgart tells us that "former employees of the Denazification Ministry are having difficulty in finding new positions either in government or private industry." These tendencies have most frequently emerged in the arguments of defense couns el at the Nurnberg trials; indeed, during the past year I personally have found these defense arguments to be the most significant and revealing feature of the trials. At the outset, defense counsel chiefly endeavored to show that their particular clients were not individually responsible for atrocities, and had disapproved or opposed them. More recently, some German lawyers con- tend that these things were not crimes at all. It is argued, for example, that the Germans were entirely vithin their rights in rounding up . SERVICL and Belgians and Poles and Russians and deporting thcm to Germany to forced GOVENNA labor in German mines and factories. The undisputed evidence of concentration camp outrages, gassings of Jews by the million, and infamous medical experi- ments on human beings seems to have made relatively little dent; now we are blandly told that the allied bombing offensive was far more wicked, and a recent revien of General Eisenhower's book "Crusade in Europe, which appeared in a German newspaper, is violently critical of General Eisenhower for having auth- orized the bombing of Germany; the earlier German raids on Rotterdam, Belgrade and London go unmentioned. Anti-semitism is far from dead and now gives rise to excuses for the Nazi porsecution of Jews; last November one of the German lawyers told the court: In fact, in all communist revolts in Germany Jews played a leading part; in any economic crisis Jens managed to make money at the ex- pense of non-JeNs; in many leading professions Jews vere in an overwhelming majority though only little more than 1% of the popula- tion was Jewish. Lack of modesty and tact, and an arrogant sneer at ideals dear to the bulk of the German population did a lot of harm, to the misfortune of all decent and sonsible Jews.
