DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY
WASHINGTON, D.C.
4 April 1949
The President
permoned
The White House
Dear Mr. President:
In further reference to my letter of March 25, 1949,
concerning the Malmedy war crimes trial, I am inclosing a
copy of a radiogram just received from General Clay in which
he states he is confirming the death sentence of defendant
Joachim Peiper, a Lieutenant Colonel commanding the Combat
Group Peiper. This completes action by General Clay on the
twelve Malmedy death sentences, six of which he has now re-
affirmed. Please be advised that the Peiper case is one in
which I have stayed execution, and the Army Judge Advocate
General is now examining the record of trial as a basis for
my personal consideration.
Respectfully yours,
Kenneth C. Royall
