COLUMBIA, MD.,Oct. 11:-- Growing reminiscent in his speech here to-
night, his first appearance in this city since he opened his primary
campaign in Columbia July 6, ,Judge Harry S. Truman, Democratic candidate
for United states senator, reverted to several declarations he had made
then.
Truman said that he would like' to repeat his primary opening speech
tonight as fully expressing his belief on social and economic issues
confronting the voters. He repeated several paragrapEhs of his open-
ing talk in emphasizing his points.
I said here July 6 that , the education in applied economics which
has spread so widely within a short year beoause of the President's ef-
fprts has been nearly as great and effective a contribution to future
progress as have been the legislative acts which gave form to his ideas!
Several weeks ago,Mr. Roosevelt himself dwelt on this point, when
he declared that the public's education on national issues was a 'note-
worthy contribution' toward the success of the New Deal. He urged fur-
thur t !ought and discussion on social and economic matters to the end
that the public might know as fully sis possible the reasons behind ev-
ery move toward a better and higher social order.
The America of today is not the simple and trusting America of
the little red school housennd the McGuffey readers. We have learned
that wealth not always is the rew rd of virtue and is to be applauded
m tter,
without question. A hertinent
in view of what we know about
the acquirement of wealth in these modern days, is as to hou the holder
obtained it and how much public spoiliation it totals.
