EDITORIAL REACTION TO CURRENT ISSUES
(Issued on a continuing basis as events warrant)
GREEK SITUATION
Part V
(Editorials from 225 papers received Apr. 1 to Apr. 12)
Prepared by
Division of Press Intelligence
Office of Government Reports
General support of the President's aid program continues in the
daily press. On the proposal as a whole it is better than 3 to 1 during the
period covered by this analysis.
Almost exactly half of the editorials covered are concerned with
the by-passing of UN and events bearing on the role of UN. On each phase or
event, majority sentiment conforms with the President's position and the
attendant change in our foreign policy. Often it is almost unanimous.
Only 1 of 12 editorials on unanimous Senate Committee approval of
the bill is condemnatory. Only 1 of 9 on Sen. George's plea for relief program
is critical. Byrd's demand, on the other hand, for a balance sheet of our
foreign commitments before Congress acts, is supported 10 to 7.
President Truman's Jefferson Day speech is commended 8 to 7.
Wallace's opposition here and abroad is scored 15 to 1.
