COMMUNISM VERSUS DEMOCRACY - THE FUTURE?
What will be the future development of relations between
Soviet Russia and Capitalistic Democracy? Is the conclusion that Com-
munism means a seemingly inevitable conflict between them a valid one?
factor
Can this conflict be avoided in any way? What is the time angle in-
volved? What are the possibilities of changes, either in Communism or
in Democracy, which might eliminate conflict between them? An effort
will be made here to explore questions such as these. In this explor-
ation, it is helpful first to summarize those attributes of Communism
which suggest the inevitability of armed conflict and then to search
for developments which might afford a means of escape from a seemingly
inevitable conflict.
According to Communism, War Is Inevitable_ .
It should be clear from what has gone before that the basic
philosophy of Communism not only is conducive to, but indeed demands,
an ultimate conflict between Communism and Capitalistic Democracy.
The inevitability of the overthrow of Capitalism, the idea that such
overthrow must be worldwide to be successful, the concept that it is
the basic function of Communism actively to contribute to this over-
throw, and the philosophy that any means which will facilitate the
establishment of Communism are morally justified, clearly establish
the inevitability of violent conflict between Communism and Capital-
istic Democracy unless one or the other is radically modified.
